Screening Eight Cultivars of Alstroemeria Cut Flower for Vase Life and Biochemical Traits
Authors
Abstract:
Alstroemeria is one of the most popular cut flowers in European Union owing to its postharvest longevity and broad color spectra. Nevertheless, premature wilting decreases the aesthetic value of flowering branches even before the opening of the secondary florets in the fluorescence. The present study evaluated different biochemical and morphological traits of Alstroemeria cut flowers in order to screen the longevity of eight cultivars of Alstroemeria cut flowers including (Topaz, Chicago, Mayfair, Onyx, Frosty, Bellevue, Samantha, and Dimension). Traits such as longevity, wilting, water uptake, chlorophyll content, total soluble solids, relative water content, catalase activity, peroxidase activity, and protein content were evaluated. Data were subjected to the statistical and cluster analysis. The results showed that Mayfair and Frosty cultivars have the greatest distance from another. Mayfair had the lowest longevity. Frosty exhibited the most significant difference and was the most different cultivar from other cultivars in terms of biochemical traits, so that it was clustered in a separate group. As a result, two cultivars with the longest and the shortest longevity was determined. Maximum peroxidase activity was related to Frosty, differing significantly from that of Mayfair.

The Effect of Ethanol and Cycloheximide on the Vase Life of Cut Flowers Alstroemeria (Alstroemeria hybrida)
Alstroemeria is one of the most beautiful flowers in the family Alstroemeriaceae. One of the major problems of this cut flower is short life of leaves, this fact reduces the economic value of this cut flower. Abscission of petal before wilting is also considered as one of the most important problems of this flower. Petals of this flower are very sensitive to ethylene. A factorial experiment bas...

In this research, the effects of thidiazuron pulse treatment and salicylic acid were examined to improve vase life and maintain the quality of Alstroemeria ҅Modena҆ cut flowers. The experiment was done in a factorial experiment based on RCD with 16 treatments, 3 replications and 48 plots. The flowers were placed in different concentrations of thidiazuron (0, 10, 20, and 50 μM) and salicylic acid ...

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of K/Ca ratios of nutrient solution on physiological traits, cut flower vase life and postharvest changes of rose. The main experiment was factorial based on completely randomized design with two cvs. of rose (Magic Red and Capitol), five K/Ca ratios in the nutrient solution (4:4, 6:4, 6:3, 8:3, 10:2) and three replications. Increasing the ...

In this study, the effects of peppermint and rose extracts on delaying the aging of Alstroemeria spp. cut flowers were investigated. Peppermint and rose extracts were used in concentrations of 10, 20 and 30%. Quantitative and qualitative traits such as vase life, flower opening index, water uptake, fresh weight, dry weight, population of bacteria in vase solution and stem end, ion leakage, decr...

In order to improve the vase life of alstroemeria cut flowers (Alstroemeria aurantiaca), an experiment was performed based on completely randomized design with 10 treatments including cycloheximide (50, 100 and 200 mg l-1), benzyladenine (50, 100 and 200 mg l-1), coconut juice (5, 10 and 20 %) and control (distilled water) in three replications. In this study, characteristics such as vase life,...
full textEffect of Nitric Oxide on Postharvest Quality and Vase Life of Cut Carnation Flower
Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive signaling molecule and plays a variety of physiological roles in plants. The research on the application of NO to postharvest preservation of flowers and fruits shows great promise in recent years. However, the physiological mechanism of exogenous NO to affect cut flowers is not very clear, and NO donor treatment protected plants from damage by increasing ...
